Hi,
How can we configure QuickBoard (using Scan2Deploy) with a Nordic QWERTY layout with 11 keys in both upper rows – i.e. Å after P and Ö & Ä after L? The layout configurator gives an error “Too many buttons in the row. Cannot have more than 10 buttons.” even when setting the per-key width to 0.9.
Hi Aapeli,
Welcome to the developer board.
Unfortunately, the maximum number of buttons in QuickBoard rows is ten, as you discovered. Although not the standard in Nordic countries, you can add extra rows so you can add the letters with diacritical marks on the extra row or rows.
Let me take your question to our developers to see if we might be able to extend this number of characters per line in the future. Sorry that we don’t accommodate this at the moment.
It seems like Google already offers a “Suomi” Gboard layout. Aside from selecting it while testing internationalization of our software years ago, I must admit that I haven’t used that keyboard much, but it seems like it should work. Or are you looking to create a special keyboard that does more than Gboard. I’m curious what your needs are, so I can feed this back into our system for continuing improvements.
I hope to hear from you soon. Thank you for bringing up this issue.
Good luck,

Thanks for your prompt reply, Scott.
Let’s hope the limit could be lifted in the future as we’d really like to use the QuickBoard for the benefits it gives. However, changing the keyboard layout completely is not an option, because end-users really expects to have the same layout as everywhere else.
Gboard indeed provides good support for the basic layout, but it can’t be configured from Scan2Deploy not to show all the emoji nonsense etc.

Hi Aapeli,
I spoke with the lead developer of QuickBoard, and he said that he set the maximum number of keys per row at ten because with eleven or more, the keys started to clip the letters displayed on them even with the narrowest gutter between the keys. I can see what he means, given the way he rendered each key on screen. He said the other limitation is the horizontal resolution available on most of our products’ displays.
Despite this, I’ll write a feature request to add more keys per row. Decades ago I was a graphic designer, and I can imagine some visual tricks that might allow clear presentation of more keys per row without clipping the graphics on the keys.
Thank you for bringing up this need, especially the desire to get rid of emoji keys on the Finnish virtual keyboard.
Kind regards,
